Your Google Business Profile (GBP) is the single most important local SEO asset you own. It appears in Google Maps, the local 3-Pack, and local search results — often before your website ever gets a click. A fully optimized GBP can generate 50-300% more views, clicks, and calls than a basic, half-completed profile. This is the complete 2026 checklist to ensure you are using every feature Google offers to dominate your local market.

1. Business Information — Get the Basics Perfect

Start with the foundation. Every field in the Business Information section matters:

  • Business name — Use your exact registered business name. Do not add location keywords or services to the name field (it violates Google's guidelines and can get your profile suspended).
  • Primary category — Choose the most specific category that describes your core service. A "dental implant specialist" should not use "dentist" as the primary category.
  • Additional categories — Add every relevant secondary category. A roofing company might add "gutter cleaning service," "siding contractor," and "inspection company."
  • Address and service area — If you serve customers at their location, set a service area covering every city and neighborhood you work in. If customers come to you, verify your address is exact.
  • Phone number — Use a local number, not a toll-free line. Local numbers convert better and signal local relevance to Google.

2. Business Description — Write a Keyword-Rich Story

Your business description is 750 characters of prime SEO real estate. Write for humans first, but naturally include your primary keywords, city names, and service areas in the first 250 characters (what shows before the "Read more" click).

Example for a plumbing company: "Austin's trusted emergency plumber since 2015. We specialize in 24/7 pipe repair, water heater installation, drain cleaning, and whole-home repiping. Serving Austin, Round Rock, Cedar Park, and the entire Central Texas area. Licensed, insured, and family-owned."

3. Services — Add Every Service With Descriptions

Most businesses add their main service and stop. That is a mistake. Add every service you offer, each with a detailed description and price range where applicable. Services are searchable keywords that help Google match your profile to specific queries.

  • Add services with specific names: not "repair" but "emergency pipe repair," "slab leak detection," "tankless water heater installation"
  • Include a 2-3 sentence description for each service
  • Set price ranges if applicable — this builds trust and filters out unqualified leads

4. Photos — Upload 50+ High-Quality Images

Photos are a ranking signal and a conversion signal. Businesses with more than 50 photos get significantly more engagement. Upload images across all these categories:

  • Identity: Logo, exterior signage, team photos, branded vehicles
  • Interior: Office, waiting area, treatment rooms, workshop
  • At work: Team performing services, before/during/after shots
  • Products: Equipment, tools, products you use or sell
  • Team: Individual team member portraits, group photos, credentials

5. Posts — Publish Weekly Updates

GBP posts are free advertising that almost no one uses. Post at least twice per week. Mix these types: offers and promotions, new services or products, events, and "what's new" updates about your business. Posts expire after 7 days, so consistency is key. Include a photo with every post — posts with images get 2x more engagement.

6. Q&A — Seed Common Questions

The Q&A section on your GBP is publicly visible and searchable. Seed 5-10 frequently asked questions yourself before customers do it for you. Write questions in the exact language customers use: "Do you offer same-day service?" "Are you licensed and insured?" "What areas do you serve?" This content ranks in search and answers objections before the customer even calls.

7. Products (If Applicable) — Showcase What You Sell

If you sell physical products, add them to the Products section with photos, descriptions, and prices. Even service businesses can list "service packages" as products. A spa might list "90-Minute Deep Tissue Massage — $120." These product listings appear in search and give customers a reason to click through to your profile.

8. Booking Links — Enable Direct Scheduling

If your scheduling system integrates with Google, enable booking links directly on your profile. This removes friction — customers can schedule without visiting your website. Even without direct integration, add your appointment URL to the booking link field so customers can click through and book immediately.

9. Attributes — Select Every Relevant Tag

Attributes are specific tags that describe your business features: "wheelchair accessible," "free Wi-Fi," "on-site services," "online appointments," "identifies as women-owned." These tags help Google match your profile to specific search queries and filter results. Select every attribute that applies to your business — there is no downside to being thorough.

10. Messaging — Enable and Respond Fast

Enable messaging on your GBP so customers can text you directly from search results. Set up an auto-reply that fires immediately: "Thanks for reaching out! We will get back to you within 15 minutes during business hours." Businesses that respond to GBP messages within 5 minutes convert 70% more leads than those that respond hours later.
